What are Dolch Sight Words?
Dolch sight words are the high frequency list of words published by Edward William Dolch, Ph.D. in 1948. These words are now part of the required curriculum in kindergarten through 1st and sometimes up to 3rd grade and are used as one way of estimating a primary students reading level. Dolch sight words are words that need to be recognized instantly or "on sight" for articulate reading. The Dolch Words comprise from 60 to 85% of the text in children's early reading materials. Therefore, a child who knows the Dolch Words has much of the base needed to recognize the majority of the words in a typical selection. Mastering recognition of these words can help to boost a child's motivation, confidence and eagerness to read.
The Dolch Sight Word DVDs - How It Works
Each DVD plays 100+ sight words divided into lists of 20. The words appear on screen in a visually stimulating format over a rhythm bed and voice repeating the words about eight times each. The repetition and rhythm enhances memory and provides an entertaining and much more effective way of presenting and reviewing the sight words. The DVDs are divided into lists and can be selected by chapters. The lists do not represent levels of difficulty, but instead indicate the frequency with which these words are found. The words on the first lists are found more often than words on the next lists and are usually presented first in teaching.
Through a two part series, the DVDs present over 200 of the Dolch Sight Words.
DVD Part 1 provides the kindergarten level sight words included in the following lists.
DVD Part 2 provides the sight words presented in the first through third grade levels.
